Background of the Study
Cancer pain management is a critical aspect of patient care, yet many cancer patients do not have adequate access to pain relief due to various barriers, such as limited availability of pain medications, healthcare infrastructure, and public awareness. Oncology nurses, who are often at the forefront of patient care, can play a pivotal role in advocating for better access to pain relief. This study will assess the impact of oncology nurses’ advocacy efforts on improving pain relief accessibility for cancer patients at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
Statement of the Problem
Access to appropriate cancer pain relief remains a significant challenge in many healthcare settings, including those in Nigeria. The role of oncology nurses in advocating for improved access to pain management resources is not well explored. This study seeks to investigate how oncology nurses' advocacy efforts can improve cancer patients’ access to pain relief and enhance their quality of life.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of oncology nurses in advocating for improved pain relief accessibility for cancer patients.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of oncology nurses' advocacy in improving cancer patients' access to pain management resources.
3. To explore the relationship between oncology nurses’ advocacy and cancer patients’ pain relief and quality of life.
Research Questions
1. How do oncology nurses advocate for improved pain relief accessibility for cancer patients?
2. What is the impact of oncology nurses’ advocacy efforts on the accessibility of pain management resources for cancer patients?
3. How does improved pain relief accessibility affect cancer patients’ quality of life?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurses’ advocacy significantly improves the accessibility of pain relief for cancer patients.
2. Increased access to pain relief resources positively impacts cancer patients’ quality of life.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on oncology nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, and their role in advocating for better access to pain relief for cancer patients. Limitations may include challenges in measuring the specific effects of advocacy and variability in patient access to pain management resources.
